About Lake Tohopekaliga

West Lake Tohopekaliga, often known as Lake Toho or West Lake by the locals to distinguish it from the adjacent East Lake Tohopekaliga, is where charters are done. The Seminole Indians who lived nearby gave the lake the name Tohopekaliga, which means "we will meet here." Baitfish and bass populations are supported by shallow flats of maidencane, bullrush, and hydrilla.

The bottom of Toho has been improved by allowing extreme drawdowns in the lake's water level, in addition to prime vegetation. Bulldozers remove mud deposits from shoreline areas during the drawdowns, simulating a natural drought. Toho's shoreline is now ideal for spawning bass.

The lake is 22,700 acres in size and is one of the country's most well-known bass lakes. It is well-known for consistently producing more largemouth bass than any other lake. According to researchers with the Florida Wildlife Commission, every 10 acres of lake has one bass over ten pounds. Even with the increased fishing demand brought on by its fame, Lake Toho continues to produce, with Bassmaster magazine declaring it "the most consistent lake in the country for producing both numbers and Trophy big bass" in their top 100 lakes issue. Toho hosts a number of major tournaments each year, the most well-known of which are the Bassmasters, MLF, and FLW events.
